How to know when to suspend judgement

Contents

Sometimes it is important to suspend judgement (see The importance to suspend judgement). But sometimes it may be better to do not suspend judgement and take a decision quickly.

In fact suspend a judgement and make a better interpretation of reality allows to take more accurate decisions.

But take a decision quickly allows to take decisions faster and maybe seize opportunities or focus on more important decisions.

It is necessary to find a balance. The factors that influence what strategies to choice I think that are:

  • importance of the decision
  • urgency of the decision
  • reliability of our mental models and our perception of the reality in the scope of the decision
  • risks we would face if we would take a wrong decision

Some guidelines could be:

  • If the decision is important, risks are high and decision is not so urgent, then it is better to suspend judgement.
  • If the decision is not important and the risks are low, then it is better DO NOT suspend judgement.
  • If the decisions is not important, but it is urgent, then it is better to DO NOT suspend judgement in particular if the risks are not high.
